Hi, I’m Kyra — the designer, listener, and big-picture thinker behind First District Designs. I believe great design isn’t about creating a picture-perfect home you’re afraid to live in. It’s about crafting a space that makes your life easier, your days more joyful, and your guests feel instantly welcome. If you’ve ever looked around your home and thought, this doesn’t feel like me, you’re exactly who I’m here for.

It all started with my own home — and the realization that design has the power to change the way we live. I also realized how much joy design brought me, but not just the finished product, the process. The problem-solving, the coziness, the creative spark. When friends asked for help, I said yes. Then I kept saying yes. And I realized that there are so many people who want beautiful, functional spaces, but they think hiring a designer is too fancy, too expensive, or too overwhelming.

So I built something different, rooted in the Dutch concept of gezellig, which describes that magical blend of comfort, connection, and belonging. It’s not just about how your home looks — it’s about how it feels to live there.

I don’t believe in design for design’s sake. I believe in homes that work hard, hold memories, and feel good to live in. Spaces where people gather, relax, recharge, and feel completely themselves.

I work with clients throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia — in-person and virtually. Over the years, I’ve helped transform homes big and small, guiding projects from the first idea to the final cozy throw pillow. My work has been shaped by years of experience, a deep understanding of design psychology, and a commitment to making every project as seamless as possible.
